    The short version
    • Payout follows how long the publisher expects you to stay, not how hard the puzzles are.
    • A level count and a day count can carry the same reward for wildly different effort.
    • Compare offers by hours to completion, and estimate those hours from the ramp, not the average.

    What drives the payout

Word offers are priced on retention. The publisher is buying the likelihood that you are still opening the app in a fortnight, so the reward scales with how deep into the game the milestone sits rather than with how clever the puzzles are. A hard game with a shallow target pays less than an easy game with a deep one, which surprises people the first time they notice it.

That is why comparing headline figures across the wall tells you very little. Two offers with similar rewards can represent three hours and thirteen hours of play. The only comparison worth making is reward against your own estimated hours, and estimating those hours is the whole skill.

    Levels against streaks

    Level and puzzle counts

The default shape. You are asked to reach a number, and the clock only matters as a deadline. These reward concentrated effort — a free Sunday can cover a third of the target — and they forgive an interrupted week entirely. They also carry the ramp risk, since a number that looked modest can hide a very slow final quarter.

    Daily and consecutive-day streaks

Common on daily-puzzle titles, where the whole design is one board a day. Total time spent is often tiny, which makes the reward per hour excellent. The cost is inflexibility. A consecutive-day requirement means a single missed evening can reset the count, and no amount of free time afterwards buys it back.

    Chapter and collection targets

A few titles ask you to complete a themed region or collection rather than count anything. These are the hardest to estimate because the number of boards inside a chapter is not always visible in advance, and a collection can quietly require a bonus board you have to unlock separately. Worth a little research before committing.

    The difficulty ramp

Here is the part no offer card tells you. Word games do not gate you with resources, so the only brake on your progress is the vocabulary getting harder, and it does that gradually and then suddenly. The practical effect is that the second half of a level target usually costs more time than the first half, sometimes twice as much.

This changes how you should estimate. Clear ten levels, time them, and then assume the back end runs at something closer to half that rate rather than the same rate. A hundred-level target that feels like two hours at your current pace is realistically three or four, and an offer that looked generous on that basis may not be.

    1. Time ten levels at your current depth, not at level one, before you extrapolate.
    2. Assume the back half of the target runs at roughly half your current pace.
    3. Add time for the boards you will lose to unfamiliar words, because there will be some.
    4. Then divide the reward by that figure, and only then compare it with another offer.

    How I would rank them

By reward per hour, non-consecutive day counts win. Playing on seven separate days at five minutes a day is under an hour of actual play for a reward comparable to a multi-evening ladder, and the flexibility means you almost cannot fail it. If you see one of these, take it ahead of almost anything else on the word wall.

    • Non-consecutive day counts — best rate, almost no failure risk.
    • Consecutive-day streaks — same rate, but one missed evening ends it.
    • Moderate level counts — the dependable middle, easy to estimate and to finish.
    • Deep level counts and chapter targets — only on a game you would play anyway.

Consecutive-day streaks come second, with a caveat. The hourly rate is just as good, but the failure mode is total rather than partial, so they are only worth taking if you genuinely have a fixed daily habit to attach them to. If your evenings are unpredictable, the expected value is much worse than the card suggests.

Moderate level counts sit third and are the reliable workhorse of the category. Deep level counts I would take only on a game I actively enjoy, because the ramp makes the last stretch slow and the only thing that carries you through it is wanting to play. That is the honest ranking, and it puts enjoyment closer to the centre of the decision than most categories would.
